SPHS COUNSELING PROGRAM
We believe all students....
have dignity and worth
are capable of academic achievement
have the right to know all academic and career options in order to make informed decisions
deserve equitable access to a rigorous education
have the right to the benefit of a comprehensive school counseling program provided by a credentialed school counselor
Below is information that we hope will be helpful to new and returning SPHS students and parents.
Counselors are available for academic, personal/social and career counseling.
How does a student request to meet with their counselor?
A “Counselor of the Day” will be available on a daily basis before and after school, during break and lunch to assist students.
Students who want to see their assigned counselor can come to the office at the above times. If a student’s counselor is not available, the student can fill out a “request to see my counselor” slip and clip it on their door.
How does a parent request to meet with their student’s counselor?
In order to best meet the needs of our students, please call your student’s counselor to make an appointment using their direct phone line or you may contact Judi Laguna, Counseling Secretary at 291-6049 for assistance.
College/University Representative Visits to SPHS
College reps will be on campus for information sessions. Please go to Guidance Information section below for the College Visit list. Students need to see Mrs. Laguna in the counseling office to sign up.
Students will be signing up for summer school during their registration dates in March with their counselors. Due to the budget allocated for summer school, space will be more limited than before and summer school will be for remediation only.
The dates for summer school are: June 3-June 20 1st session. June 23-July 11 2nd session (4th of July is a holiday).
School safety and WeTip
We are very concerned about school safety and we want your student to learn in a relaxed, safe environment. Our school district participates in the WeTip program. WeTip is a way to report safety concerns annonymously. Please talk to your student about using this valuable tool. Students may report bullying, vandalism, drug sales and trafficking, and anything that puts the well-being of our students at danger.
Please visit www.wetip.com for more information. There are rewards if the tip leads to an arrest or conviction of up to $1,000. You may also call 1-800-78-CRIME to make a report.
Summer Enrichment Programs
The summertime is a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience college life and to meet students from all over the globe. Please click on the document titled "Summer Enrichment Programs" on the right side to see what opportunities are available for your student. Good luck!
SAT Prep and other courses at Palomar College
Palomar college offers many courses for teens, in particular SAT Preparation. Another popular course is Driver's education. For more information, please go to www.palomar.edu/venture and click on teen classes.

Important Announcements for Seniors!
Financial Aid is a term that refers to all types of money for post-high school education at accredited institutions (includes trade & technical programs). The national form that must be filed to receive aid is the FAFSA. Financial Aid is a three-step process. First, go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to receive your pin number. Second, fill out the FAFSA application. Third, fill out the GPA verification form (a quick process)
The financial aid information was placed in the senior registration packet at the start of the school year. If it was not turned in, these items were given to students in their English classes.
It is suggested to apply for the FAFSA even if monetary need is not a requirement for your family, as many merit based scholarships require a FAFSA application.
Scholarships: On January 31st, scholarship packets will be distributed to your students in their classrooms. This packet contains information on local, regional, and San Pasqual specific scholarships. Students are encouraged to apply as they are competing with a smaller pool of applicants.
Palomar Early Acceptance Program (EAP): Any senior planning on attending Palomar should participate in the EAP program. This program consists of two sessions, a testing session and an application session. Both sessions are mandatory. The EAP program is an excellent opportunity for students to get some individual help in the transitions from high school to community college. This program is conducted during the school day and is free of charge. The sessions will be held as follows: Monday, March 24 and Tuesday, March 25th. We may need to add March 26th if there is a need for an extra day. Sign ups for the EAP will be in the counseling office March 3rd through March 7th. Students must obtain a Palomar ID number prior to testing. Please refer to letter that was sent home to all senior students regarding the EAP.
Reminder: Most schools accept all test scores-SAT or ACT and SAT II (UC only) through the December test date. There are exceptions so refer to the college/university’s official website.
Letters of Recommendation: Students needing letters of recommendation for any purpose should make the request to a counselor or teacher at least 2 weeks in advance. Students should also provide a resume or student data sheet (in counseling office) to the person writing the letter.
